The pharmaceutical industry is a mainstay of the Swiss economy. In 2018 it generated gross value of 36 billion francs in Switzerland, equivalent to 5.4 percent of the country's total economic output. Without the pharmaceutical industry's high real growth in value creation, averaging 9.3 percent annually, growth in Swiss GDP between 2008 and 2018 would have been one third lower. The pharmaceutical companies' success also benefits other sectors: Factoring in the relevant value chains in companies outside the industry, pharma activities generated value of around CHF 62.1 billion in 2018.

The economic importance of the pharmaceutical industry manifests in many ways: over the past 25 years, its companies have created thousands of additional jobs, and now almost one Swiss franc in ten is generated along the value chains of their research, development and production activities. The real economic output of the pharmaceutical industry tripled in the last ten years and was responsible for over 40 percent of Swiss economic growth. The basis for this outstanding achievement is the enormous capacity for innovation and productivity, coupled with international competitiveness.
