La douleur, \u00e9galement appel\u00e9e <strong>nociception, est la r\u00e9action inconsciente \u00e0 des stimuli nocifs<\/strong>. Cette r\u00e9action est relay\u00e9e par le syst\u00e8me nerveux p\u00e9riph\u00e9rique<sup>1<\/sup> et ne fait pas intervenir le cerveau pour la r\u00e9ponse initiale. En revanche, l\u2019<strong>\u00e9motion exige une exp\u00e9rience subjective<\/strong> qui peut \u00eatre attirante ou aversive, positive ou n\u00e9gative. Par exemple, lorsqu\u2019on a constat\u00e9 que les poissons pouvaient tirer des le\u00e7ons d\u2019exp\u00e9riences n\u00e9gatives et \u00e9viter les situations dangereuses, on en a conclu qu\u2019ils avaient \u00absenti\u00bb et trait\u00e9 ces situations nocives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Concernant les insectes, on a longtemps pens\u00e9 qu\u2019ils r\u00e9agissaient \u00e0 des stimuli nocifs de fa\u00e7on r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9e, sans apprentissage. Dans une \u00e9tude publi\u00e9e dans <em>PNAS<\/em>, Matilda Gibbons et ses coll\u00e8gues ont contest\u00e9 ce paradigme en pr\u00e9sentant aux bourdons une solution avec diff\u00e9rentes concentrations de sucre (de 10 \u00e0 40%) \u2013 la plus forte concentration de sucre \u00e9tant l\u2019option pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9e des bourdons. Cependant, lorsque la mangeoire \u00e0 40% a \u00e9t\u00e9 chauff\u00e9e \u00e0 55&nbsp;\u00b0C, <strong>les bourdons ont fait un compromis entre leur motivation \u00e0 \u00e9viter la chaleur d\u00e9sagr\u00e9able et leur pr\u00e9f\u00e9rence pour les niveaux \u00e9lev\u00e9s de sucre.<\/strong> Lorsque les mangeoires non chauff\u00e9es contenaient beaucoup de sucre, les bourdons \u00e9vitaient les mangeoires chaudes. Mais quand les mangeoires non chauff\u00e9es avaient moins de sucre, les bourdons \u00e9taient plus dispos\u00e9s \u00e0 aller vers les mangeoires chaudes pour la r\u00e9compense plus sucr\u00e9e. Cela signifie que les bourdons ont pris une d\u00e9cision bas\u00e9e sur leur motivation: ils \u00e9taient pr\u00eats \u00e0 supporter la chaleur si le sucre en valait la peine. Les bourdons ont fait ces choix en apprenant \u00e0 reconna\u00eetre les couleurs associ\u00e9es aux diff\u00e9rents niveaux de sucre, sugg\u00e9rant qu\u2019ils <strong>utilisaient leur cerveau pour \u00e9valuer les options et d\u00e9cider, plut\u00f4t que simplement r\u00e9agir automatiquement<\/strong>. Cette r\u00e9ponse comportementale d\u00e9montre l\u2019intervention du syst\u00e8me nerveux central<sup>2<\/sup> (qui implique le cerveau) pour \u00e9viter les mangeoires chauff\u00e9es, ce qui corrobore l\u2019id\u00e9e que m\u00eame les insectes peuvent \u00e9prouver une certaine sensibilit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alors que la recherche continue de faire la lumi\u00e8re sur les complexit\u00e9s du comportement des insectes, la question de savoir si ceux-ci ressentent des \u00e9motions demeure ouverte, mais de plus en plus pressante.
