The data are submitted to Swissmedic as part of the\nauthorisation dossier. The Swissmedic authorisation includes a decision on the\nshelf-life (EXP: \u2018The medicinal product may only be used up to the date marked\n\u201cEXP\u201d on the container\u2019). After the product has been authorised, its shelf-life\nmay be shortened or extended depending on the results of continuing stability\nstudies. This is done either by the pharmaceutical company applying to\nSwissmedic or Swissmedic ordering the change to be made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Internationally valid standards<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The shelf-life\nis defined by the international requirements of the ICH (International Council\non Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Registration of Pharmaceuticals\nfor Human Use) and the WHO, not on a country-by-country basis but for entire\nclimatic zones (ICH: climatic zones in the EU, USA and Japan; WHO: allocation\nof countries to four climatic zones). Switzerland is situated within the\nEuropean climatic zone and is optimally covered by the ICH and WHO guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Short shelf-life offers no advantage<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Misuse as a\nresult of deliberately short shelf-lives is not in the pharmaceutical\nindustry\u2019s interests. A short shelf-life would have a negative impact on the\nexport, in particular, of a medicinal product. Short shelf-lives can create\nmajor logistical challenges or problems in distribution. Shelf-lives that are\nas long as possible enable more flexible logistics in production and\ndistribution since larger quantities can be manufactured cost-effectively for\nwarehousing. This also reduces the economic risk of having to destroy stored\nmedicinal products because their shelf-life has expired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Patient safety has priority<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Correctly\ndocumented shelf-lives determined in compliance with internationally valid\nguidelines ensure quality and thus patient safety.
